Youths Give Ideas On How To Organise Youth Olympic Games

June 28, 2008

SINGAPORE: Some 3,500 people are offering to be volunteers for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games (YOG). The organisers are targeting up to 7,000 volunteers.

Manpower aside, ideas too, especially from the young, are being sought after. So a two-day retreat was held to get the youths to put on their thinking caps.

The retreat was held at the headquarters of the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee.

Singapore wants the inaugural YOG to be for the young, by the young. That’s why some 80 youths shared their ideas on how more could get involved.

Joining the Singaporeans were students from seven other countries, including China and Italy.

The participants had some novel ideas, covering various areas like media, people and the Olympic culture and values.

Participant Lee Shie Yar said: “We suggest a photo montage whereby we will collect photos from Singapore and also other countries who participate in the Olympics.

“We will collect the photos and form the five rings of the Olympics. We will enlarge it and put it at Changi Airport, so that the people who come to Singapore can feel connected.”

The YOG committee will help implement some of the ideas proposed at the retreat.

The retreat also helped students in terms of bonding.

Participant Radhika Kannan said: “We get to understand where other youths come from, their ideas as well, and it’s a kind of forum for the sharing of different ideas and how different things can work out when we work in a team.”

This is the second in a series of retreats – the first involved professionals from the creative industry.

Before the YOG in 2010, Singapore will be hosting the first Asian Youth Games in 2009. More details on the budget and the number of sports for the Asian Youth Games will be revealed in two weeks.

Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development, Youth and Sports, said: “We are still working on the budget… Based on six to eight or nine sports, I think this will definitely be much less than what we could budget for the Youth Olympic Games.”

He said whatever the number, the ministry will “make sure that it will be a Games that will serve to meet the reputation and credibility of Singapore”.

Effectively, Singapore has only 12 months to prepare for the Asian Youth Games, slated for July 2009. That means upgrading works for some venues slated for the Youth Olympic Games will now have to be fast-tracked to meet the earlier deadline.

BADMINTON: The Younger Lads Appear A Better Bet

June 27, 2008

AS in football and hockey, so now in badminton we are depending on the old guard to secure success. The Badminton Association of Malaysia has opted for Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah rather than the up-and-coming pair Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Tazari, who recently won back-to-back titles, especially the tough Indonesian Open, beating the famous Chandra-Gunawan combination in the final.

Choong-Lee are inconsistent and injury-prone.

They have twice participated in the Olympic Games without winning any medal.

So why should Malaysia still depend on this unpredictable pair?

Give the young pair of Zakry-Fairuzizuan the chance to prove themselves at the Beijing Olympics because if they fail to win any medals they still have the chance to do it again at the next Olympics.

Zakry-Fairuzizuan have a proven record since they beat the formidable Chinese second pair in the Thomas Cup tournament a few months ago, and now the back-to-back titles at the Singapore and Indonesian Open.

But they will only go to Beijing if either Choong -Lee and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong get injured and if that doesn’t happen, they must say goodbye to the Olympics.

Asian Youth Games: Singapore To Host Eight Sports In 2009 Games

June 24, 2008

SINGAPORE: In slightly over a year’s time, Singapore will host the inaugural Asian Youth Games.

On Monday, the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) confirmed the Games will feature eight sports – track and field, bowling, beach volleyball, three-on-three basketball, sailing, shooting, swimming and diving, and table tennis. It will be held from July 2-9.

The SSC and Ministry of Education (MOE) will spearhead the organising of the Games, which will be used to help Singapore prepare for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, which it will host from August 14-26, 2010.

The Asian Youth Games’ opening ceremony will be held in conjunction with the Singapore Youth Festival.

Further details will be announced soon, but it is believed the organising committee and majority of the manpower to stage the Asian Youth Games will come from the SSC and MOE.

Hosting the Asian Youth Games was part of Singapore’s bid plan submitted to the International Olympic Committee when the Republic was bidding to stage the Youth Olympics.

Many, if not all of the Olympic Council of Asia’s 45 member nations are expected to compete in the Games. –

Athletics: No Coach, But Hup Wei Stays Focused

June 21, 2008

Lee Hup Wei
Lee Hup Wei

AS the wait continues for the arrival of his Cuban coach, Lee Hup Wei is not sitting idle with two international competitions in Finland lined up for the high jumper next month.

Hup Wei, 21, will prime himself for his debut Olympic appearance in Beijing against an international cast at two Finnish meets on July 16 and 20.

The Selangor-born athlete will also compete in the Malaysian Pre-Olympic Athletic Championships in Bukit Jalil on July 4-5 but the Finland competitions will be his last before the start of the Olympic Games on Aug 8.

Hup Wei, who qualified for the Beijing Olympics by setting a new national record of 2.27m at the China Open last month, has shown steady progress over the last 18 months with the intention of reaching his peak in Beijing.

Much credit for his improvement goes to his Cuban coach Antonio Yznaga Ibar who, however, had to return home for health reasons in April.

Even the delayed arrival of a replacement coach from the same country has not stunted Hup Wei’s progress as he continues his development under the care of former Sea Games gold medallist Lau Cwee Peng, at least until the Olympics.

Hup Wei will skip the three-leg Asian Grand Prix series next week after having gone through a strenuous five weeks which took in three high-profile competitions.

The China Open, where he shattered the previous national record of 2.24m he held jointly with Loo Kum Zee, followed his season debut at the Thailand Open when he only managed to clear 2.05m, causing concern that he would not qualify for the Olympics in the absence of Yznaga Ibar.

But with the pressure finally off after the China Open, Hup Wei set a new Games record of 2.20m before opting to pass at a further attempt having already secured the gold medal at the recent Malaysia Games.

Azizulhasni Luar Biasa – MSN

June 19, 2008

Ederus Yunus, Mohd. Rizal Tisin dan Junaidi Mohd. Nasir.

Namun salah seorang daripada mereka akan digugurkan Persatuan Kebangsaan Berbasikal Malaysia kerana Kesatuan Lumba Basikal Antarabangsa menetapkan hanya empat pelumba boleh beraksi. – Bernama

Olympics: Williams Pulls Out Of Beijing Games

June 18, 2008

LONDON : Great Britain’s Rhys Williams pulled out of the Beijing Olympics on Tuesday after the 400 metres hurdler suffered a stress fracture to his right foot.

Williams, who won bronze at the 2006 European Championships and silver in the 4×400m relay, sustained the problem running in Sunday’s Welsh Championships and will be out for six weeks, meaning he misses next month’s Olympic trials.

His father, former Wales rugby star and international sprinter JJ Williams, told the BBC: “Rhys is absolutely gutted. After all the injuries he’s had, he was totally fit and feeling great, so he decided to have a run out on Sunday.

“The Welsh Championships was a fairly low key event. He entered the 200m and breezed through the heat.

“Thirty minutes later, he ran in the final, and after 20m cracked something in his foot. He’s devastated.” – AFP/de

Hong Kong Toughens Rhetoric To Avoid Olympic Games Protests

June 18, 2008

HONG KONG: Hong Kong is making every effort to ensure that the Olympic equestrian events go without a hitch, but onlookers warn the tough rhetoric is a mask for a clampdown on any embarrassing dissent.

With fewer than two months to go before the world’s top riders gather here for the eventing, dressage and show jumping events, the authorities have revealed a string of tough measures.

Up to 4,000 police officers will be on duty at any one time during the three-week event, and all police leave has been cancelled from the end of July until September, senior officers have said.

There will be restricted flying zones and limited access by waterways near the venues, reports have said, while the horses will be under 24-hour surveillance at the specially-built stables.

Earlier this week, the rhetoric was stepped up further as Hong Kong’s new immigration director, Simon Peh, seemed to suggest a potential terrorist threat.

“Intelligence said some people are plotting to sabotage the Olympic Games, including the equestrian events,” Peh told local reporters, according to The Standard newspaper.

“Of course this kind of intelligence will continually change… right now the main individuals who might sabotage the event are terrorists,” he said, insisting any potential troublemakers would be banned.

The government quickly played down the remarks, insisting the risk of attack was moderate.

Timothy Fok, president of Hong Kong Sports Federation and a key Olympic organiser, warned such talk could scare off much-needed visitors.

“Lots of international friends are coming to Hong Kong in the run-up to the games. The government should give a clearer message,” he told Cable TV.

Critics said Peh was scaremongering to justify tough border controls.

“His message paves the way for the government to deny entry to those so-called trouble makers,” James To, a pro-democracy legislator, told AFP.

“The mention of the threat of terrorism serves to encourage Hong Kong people to associate the protesters with ‘terrorists’ and saves the authorities the task of giving a detailed explanation on why they have to stop protesters from coming in.”

Immigration authorities faced criticism earlier this year when they refused entry to protesters hoping to mark the Olympic torch relay’s passage through the southern Chinese city.

Hong Kong enjoys much-cherished freedoms absent in the rest of China, including the right to peaceful protest, after it was handed back to the Chinese from colonial power Britain in 1997.

However, this freedom has raised the possibility Hong Kong would be targeted during the Games by anti-China campaigners unable to protest in the mainland.

Experts said the chances of a serious attack were no more than at any high-profile event, but campaigners could target the event.

“Our assessment is that the likelihood of a full blown terrorist attack during the Olympics in Hong Kong is moderate,” said Steve Vickers, chief executive officer of security firm International Risk, which has been providing regular threat assessments to clients in the run-up to the Games.

“We think that various people will try and disrupt events to promote their causes. But people will be ill-advised to do so, because they will face the community in Hong Kong whole-heartedly opposed to them.”

Protesters during the torch relay faced a barrage of abuse from pro-China supporters, the latest sign of a strengthening patriotism here.

Ticket sales have also been strong, indicating a growing interest in a sport that until recently was little understood in the horse racing-mad city. – AFP/ac

Permulaan Baik Atlet Negara Ke Olimpik Beijing

June 17, 2008

Olympics: Queen’s Granddaughter Zara Phillips To Miss Beijing

June 12, 2008

LONDON : World eventing champion Zara Phillips, the granddaughter of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, has withdrawn from the Beijing Olympics due to an injury to her horse Toytown, she said on Wednesday.

An injury to the same horse also led to Phillips missing the 2004 Athens Olympics.

“I am very disappointed not to have the opportunity to ride at the Olympic Games and feel that Toytown deserved his chance to go,” she said in a statement.

“However, with horses these things happen and we still have a very strong team, I wish them every success.”

The British Olympic Association will select a reserve rider and horse combination to replace Phillips.

S’poreans Show Support For Team Singapore Ahead Of Beijing Olympics

June 9, 2008

SINGAPORE : With the Beijing Olympics just months away, Singaporeans from all walks of life are showing their support for Team Singapore.

Kicking off one such effort is the Singapore Sports Council’s Well-Wishing Campaign.

The Well-Wishing Campaign was launched by Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, on Sunday.

The Singapore Sports Council (SSC) hopes to garner 100,000 well wishes through special postcards which can be obtained and dropped off at locations island-wide – including 22 McDonald’s restaurants, CapitaLand malls, the Samsung Flagship Store and at various SSC’s sports facilities.

There will also be a lucky draw for a trip for two to the Olympics, worth over S$6000.

The Council has also planned two Olympic-themed roadshows, to be held at the Jurong East Sports Hall on June 20, and the National Library on July 19.

Dr Balakrishnan said, “We want everybody to do their best, get their personal best. And if in that pursuit, they can also win a medal for us, that would really be a dream come true for us.”

Participants at the Samsung Inline Skating Festival at East Coast Park also showed their support for Team Singapore on Sunday.

They are encouraging the athletes by setting a new Singapore record for the most people in a 100-metre skating relay in 15 minutes.

The kids were skating for a cause – to raise money for the Children’s Cancer Foundation.

But the day ended on an happy note for all present, with a surprise birthday party for guest of honour Senior Parliamentary Secretary Teo Ser Luck. – CNA/ms
