SWELTERING conditions at the Singapore Open athletics meet led to the withdrawal of Olympic-bound Lee Hup Wei from the high jump yesterday.
Hup Wei, 21, felt it was just not worth the risk of injury or exhaustion to compete so close to the Beijing Olympics.
“I did not jump (today) because the weather was very hot and it was not conducive.
“I need to look after my health in view of the Olympics,” said Hup Wei, who hopes to make the high jump final in Beijing.
The Singapore Open was only meant to be a warm up event for Hup Wei, who won at his last event at the Savo Games in Finland on July 21.
Another athlete headed for Beijing, pole vaulter Roslinda Samsu, will be in action today at the two-day meet.
Yap Jeng Tzan won bronze in the women’s discus yesterday when she registered a throw of 45.80m, which fell short of her own national record of 46.66m.
“It was close to her best effort and I’m happy with her performance,” said Jeng Tzan’s coach Nazar Rahim. — DEVINDER SINGH
